GCAP General Education Midterm Practice Exam

DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic Acid, which is the molecule that carries the genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth, and reproduction of all known living organisms and many viruses. The structure of DNA consists of two long strands that form a double helix, composed of nucleotides. Each nucleotide contains a deoxyribose sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base. This specific naming highlights the sugar component (deoxyribose) and distinguishes it from RNA (ribonucleic acid), which has a different sugar (ribose).

The other options mentioned do not accurately represent the molecular composition or structure of DNA, emphasizing the importance of understanding basic biochemistry concepts in genetics. For instance, 'Deoxyribonitric Acid' incorrectly refers to a nonexistent molecular structure, and 'Diplo Nucleic Acid' and 'Diterpenoid Nucleic Acid' both do not correlate with the known structure of DNA or its function in biological systems.
